During Writing this term, students in Year 4 have focused on ‘Recounts’. Recounts are a retell and are made up of an orientation, a series of events, followed by a reorientation or personal comment.
Last week, the students used their imaginations and researched a place that they would like to visit. Students used this information to create an imaginative recount about their holiday destination.
We had a lot of fun!

For the last few weeks, as part of our Writing Unit, the Grade Four students have been writing some fantastic recounts. A few of the topics the students have written recounts about include:
- “Scoop on my Summer”: the students wrote all about their exciting holidays.
- “Special Time”: the students wrote about an event in their life that was memorable.
- “Healthy Lifestyle Encounter”: the students wrote about a time where they were involved in something that was promoting a healthy lifestyle, which linked to our Inquiry topic, “How Can We Work Together to Promote a Healthy Lifestyle?”
The students have learnt about many features that are important to include in a recount: Orientation/introduction (Who? What? Where? When? Why?) – Sequence of events with time connectives (first, next, later, finally, etc.) – A conclusion (how they felt about the event/s)
The student’s major focus has been adding more detail to their writing pieces when self-editing through the use of adjectives and adverbs.
Grade 4K have done an amazing job editing their recounts. Their “special” editing glasses have helped them to identify verbs and nouns that they need to add more description to.
